commander of hamas. just this morning the first israeli fatalities. three people killed in rocket fire from the gaza strip. nbc's martin fletcher is live with us in tel aviv. good morning to you. >> reporter: they were standing on their balcony watching and waiting to see where the bombs would fall against all the odds had they been inside the building they probably wouldn't have been killed. the israelis are telling all of their people in the south of israel, do what you're told. stay inside. stay inside the bomb shelters. there are many rocket attacks still coming from gaza into israel. israel is continuing to attack hamas targets inside gaza. at least 11 palestinians have been killed. there was a funeral this morning for the hamas leader who was killed yesterday. hamas leaders did not attend the funeral because they're afraid of being assassinated by israel. israel's aims are to target the hamas leaders as they killed the millitent leader of hamas and at the same time and in particular to take out hamas's rocket capability. that's almost as significant as the killing yesterday. they had

on the second full day of the cease-fire between israel and hamas. israeli troops shot and killed a palestinian man and wounded 19 others according to health officials in gaza. israeli commanders say crowds of palestinians were trying to dang a fence and cross into israel. soldiers only fired of a palestinians ignored warning shots. corner powell live in jerusalem for us. is this affecting the cease-fire? john, this is normally the time of incident that would undermine a cease-fire agreement, particularly because just so little trust between the two sides. but it appears now third day cease-fire is holding. both sides accuse each other of violating the cease-fire. one person from the palestinian area and gaza was killed and 19 others were injured. but that was about as inflammatory as the language got. and, in fact, the top leader from hamas in gaza seemed to indicate that. >> investigate the case. our information that it is not israeli -- i think some people tried to go inside and to make something. >> now, over the next days, weeks and months, this agreement will be tested. there is no doubt

are on the rise after israelis took out the top military commander of hamas in a ferocious attack yesterday. and just this morning, the first israeli fatalities of the renewed conflict, three people killed in rocket fire from the gaza strip. nbc's martin fletcher has the latest now from tel aviv. >> reporter: palestinians in gaza are on the edge of a confrontation which neither side really wants, but that seems to be what's happening. israeli rocket attacks against gaza targeting the militant leaders of hamas are continuing tod today. they also are continue to attack rocket stockpiles from gaza. israel's goal, of course, is to stop, to prevent hamas from attacking israeli citizens with its rockets. there have been about 850 attacks this year, 100 in the last week alone, so that's what israel wants stop. at the same time, hamas has been retaliating today. at least 130 rockets fired from gaza into israeli cities. about 50 of those rockets were intercepted by israel's homemade antimissile defense system, the iron dome, but one did get through. it hit the israeli town and killed three israeli c

. but let's start with the cease-fire between israel and hamas. is it holding? >> we have had one or two unfortunate incidents, but the good news is as a whole, the quiet is holding. that's good, first and foremost, for the people of southern israel who don't have to live in fear of an incoming rocket from gaza. south of my country has returned to normal and that's what that's all about. >> looking back on the negotiations that led to the cease-fire, what was your assessment, the prime minister's assessment of the u.s. role, specifically the role president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton played? >> we were full of praise for the american role. we thought the americans were instrumental in working with egypt and others to make sure that their cease-fire would come into place and that the cease-fire would have legs, it would have longevity, and ultimately, the fact that hamas promised egypt to keep the quiet, that's an important promise. that combined with israeli deterants we'll hope will keep a long period of quiet for the people who deserve to live without fear of an incomi

so far civilians in israel. we are hearing from hamas saying that this will open the gates of hell on the occupied forces, referring to israel, so there is a lot of worry, obviously, from the civilians who live on the south right there on the gaza border in israel that they will be, again, the targets of their fury and also hearing from israel that if they are attacked, israel will retality, and we're seeing the results of that right now, suzanne. >> what do we anticipate that's going to happen in the next couple of hours in terms of escalation here? >> well, we're just -- it's one of those things where we have to wait and see. i mean, both sides are saying if you attack us, we're going to attack you, and we've been seeing this for the past few days. this really all started on thursday with the death of a 13-year-old palestinian child who was outside playing football. he was killed by a bullet. there is different stories as to who may have killed him. the israeli military says that, yes, they were in the area, but they do not believe they're responsible for the death of that boy. h
